How to Make Weave Headboards

Woven headboards are on trend right now in upscale furniture stores. The softness of the cloth tape creates a feminine quality while the straight lines add masculine strength, making this style a win-win for couples or people who prefer a neutral yet modern style. Cloth tape comes in lots of widths and colors, allowing the weaver many options if they want to vary their weave color or design.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure 6 inches away from each side of a 4-by-8-foot sheet of medium density fiberboard. Draw lines along your marks parallel with each side.

    • 2

Drill 1/2-inch holes on the inside of each corner. Cut along the lines using a jigsaw or circular saw. Clamp a 2-by-4 board along each line to act as a guide if you have trouble cutting straight.

    • 3

Sand the board with an orbital sander. Prime and paint the board using a paintbrush or foam roller. Allow each coat to dry eight hours between coats.

    • 4

Tack cloth tape along the bottom of the cut hole on the left back long side of the headboard. The tape should be moving to the left. Bring the tape over the left end and horizontal to the right and around the right end and horizontal along the back to the left. The tape should come up next to the first tape. Continue wrapping until you reach the top right back corner of the cut-out section. Tack the tape to the back of the headboard.

    • 5

Cut 1-inch foam with an electric cutting knife to be 4 inches lower and longer than the opening. Slide the foam between the front and back cloth tape so that the foam is centered. This will provide additional support and comfort.

    • 6

Tack cloth tape to the top left back of the headboard in line with the opening so that the tape is moving upward. Bring the tape over the back. Weave the tape through every other tape and under the bottom to the back. Weave the tape on the backside through every other tape, bringing the tape at an angle up next to the first tape. Bring the tape over for the second vertical row. Weave through the opposite tapes to create a checkerboard effect. Continue weaving in this same manner until you finish along the bottom right back side of the headboard. Tack the tape in place and trim off the excess.
