Most Extreme Modern Beds

A modern bed can make a bold design statement in your bedroom. Because most beds stay close to the traditional model, an extreme modern design sets the tone of the room immediately and serves as a focal point. Modern beds work well in a home with clean lines and a contemporary design scheme.
  1. Sunken Bed

    • Sunken beds create a smooth visual line in a room, providing a sleeping area without obstructing the visual space. They are built with a recessed compartment in the floor for the mattress and box spring; when the bed is assembled, the sleeping surface is at the same level as the flooring. A sunken bed works well in a room with low ceilings or limited space because it opens the space up for a clear line of sight, making the bedroom look bigger.

    Floating Bed

    • Floating beds create an optical illusion using a simple mechanism. The bed frame is built with a platform or supports that extend out from the wall. The bed sits on top of the frame, hiding the material supports from view but allowing a clear visual line underneath the mattress. The result is a bed that looks as though it is floating in midair.

    Rocking Bed

    • Built in an oval frame, a rocking bed requires more space than a traditional bed. The mattress itself runs across the long part of the interior of the oval, creating a geometric look. This type of bed allows a slight rocking motion but, because it is an oval, it will not roll over completely. A rocking bed makes a big statement in a room and is best used with a minimalist design scheme that will put the focus on the shape.

    Hanging Bed

    • Hanging beds are like giant swings suspended from the ceiling. They come in a variety of designs to suit different design aesthetics. If you want a modern bed in a traditional home, you can suspend the bed platform using very thick ropes at each corder. For a small space and an ultra-modern design, you can install a bed that lifts up into the ceiling through an electric pulley system when not in use.

    Circular Sectional

    • For a utilitarian take on a futuristic circular bed, look for a sectional option. The bed is comprised of two semi-circular halves that push together to make a circle bed. When the bed is not in use, the two halves can be rotated apart to form two sofas.
