How to Use Beds Without a Footboard

Adding a headboard or footboard to your bed is a personal preference. Headboards typically accompany a bed; footboards are not as common. A headboard provides a focal point in the bedroom, supplies a back support for sitting in bed and holds the mattress securely in place. Using available space at the end of a bed in lieu of a footboard may provide added function, texture, color and comfort to the bedroom.

Position a decorative bench at the end of the bed. Select a bench complementary to the decor. Benches provide places to sit, an extra table and a convenient area to lay reading materials. Leather, wood, iron and upholstered fabrics adorn benches to suit every decor. Some benches have an underneath open shelf or enclosed area for additional storage. Drape the bench with a color-coordinated afghan and toss a few throw pillows on top, adding color and comfort.

Place a pair of matching stools or ottomans at the foot of the bed. The added seating provides a sitting area to put on socks and shoes. Ottomans and stools are portable and can be easily moved in front of a bedroom chair as a place to rest feet. Some varieties of storage ottomans are cube-shaped with removable lids that may be flipped over and used as a tray. Ottomans and stools come in assorted wood tones, fabrics and leathers, enhancing the bedroom decor.

Move a cedar chest to the foot of the bed to provide convenient storage for extra blankets, heirloom quilts, sheets and pillows. The natural oil in cedar repels bugs and deters fungus growth, keeping bedroom linens protected and fresh. Cedar emits a natural, pleasant fragrance that is chemical-free, eliminating possible adverse reactions to chemically produced products, such as mothballs. Add a complementary cushion to the top of the chest for a softer seat.

Situate a small loveseat, settee or pair of matching chairs at the end of the bed, providing a functional sitting area in the bedroom. Create a reading nook by placing a small end table with a three-way lamp between two occasional chairs. Position an ottoman at the end of one or both of the chairs if the bedroom space is large enough to accommodate them. Children love cuddling up on the comfy loveseat or cushy settee at the foot of a bed.
