What Is the Function of a Headboard?

Headboards have been used as far back as 3100 B.C., when Pharaohs had them fashioned from gold, silver and ebony, according to the History Website article titled "Headboards Through the Ages." Throughout early history, they were meant to provide protection from the elements and a comfortable support against which to sit or recline. During the Medieval era, headboards became ornately decorative prosperity symbols. Today, headboards have many functions, both aesthetic and practical.
  1. Decoration

    • Intricate carvings are one of many possible decorative features of headboards.

Purchase a headboard that complements any type of decor or make one yourself, customizing it to enhance the room in which it is placed. Basic headboards are made from wood, metal or iron and are usually simple boards or bars. More elaborate headboards may be painted, stained, carved, engraved, upholstered or dramatically shaped. Extra features such as finials, drapery and quilting provide a textured look. In some cases, a standard headboard might be replaced with a canopy, mirror or artwork.

A decorative headboard makes the bed the focal point of the room and enhances wall decor and bedding. Some headboards add a subtle touch of elegance, while others make a striking statement.

    Comfort

    • A solid, wooden headboard allows you to partially recline in bed.

Headboards can make your bed a more comfortable place to sleep and rest. When your bed is positioned along a cold wall or window, a sturdy and solid headboard will keep your bed warmer and protect you from drafts.

Your headboard also serves as a solid support you can use as a backrest. Some headboards are upholstered, padded and quilted. These headboards provide extra comfort if you prefer to prop yourself up while reading, watching television or eating.

    Storage

    • Get the most storage out of a small bedroom by choosing a headboard that features built-in shelving. Some headboards are sold with shelf space, such as small ledges designed for books and photos, or large cubbies designed for extra linens, clothing, electronics or almost anything else for which you need to find space.

Press a tall shelving unit between your bed and a wall to create your own headboard with built-in storage. Paint and decorate the shelves to match your bedroom decor.

    Display

    • Use your headboard as a ledge or frame to accentuate art, photos, knickknacks or cards. Many headboards are sold with display ledges or built-in frames. Some novelty headboards may feature cork board or sleeves used to display photos and mementos.

"Southern Living" recommends using a salvage piece, such as a mantel, to serve as a headboard that can display your treasures and make a decorative statement. You can also use a salvaged door or folding screen as a headboard that can display photos and stationery.
