The Size of California King & King Mattresses

Mattresses come in a variety of sizes to fit a number of lifestyles and room sizes. Two of the largest available mattresses are the king and California king. The difference is that the California king is longer and narrower while the king is shorter and wider.
  1. King Beds

    • Also known as Eastern kings, standard king beds are 76 inches wide and 80 inches long. It is the same length as a queen bed but is 9 inches wider on both sides. Standard kings give two sleepers 38 inches of sleeping space. They typically use two 38-inch box springs.

    California King Beds

    • California king beds are 72 inches wide and 84 inches long. The extra length can accommodate taller sleepers. It offers two sleepers 36 inches of sleeping width, 6 inches more per person than a queen bed. It uses two 36-inch box springs instead of a single large box spring to facilitate movement.

    Uses

    • King beds are ideal for couples because they offer enough comfortable sleeping space for two people. Deciding between the California King and standard king may depend on your height or the size of the room. A longer room may require a California King while a shorter, wider room may require a standard king. Perform proper measurements to determine which is the best fit for your bedroom.

    Other Sizes

    • Other bed sizes include twins (39 x 75 inches), XL twins (39 x 80 inches), fulls, or doubles, (54 x 75 inches) and queens (60 x 80 inches). Twins and twin XLs are ideal for children or in dorm rooms where space is scarce. Fulls and queens are larger and more appropriate for two people but don't take up as much space as kings, making them better for smaller bedrooms.
