Pillow Top Vs. Non-Pillow Top Mattresses

Pillow top mattresses and standard non-pillow top mattresses are two of the more common mattress types found in stores. The difference between the two is an extra layer of padding on the pillow top mattresses, making them softer. Choosing between a pillow top or standard mattress comes down to personal preference and sleeping habits.
  1. Non-Pillow Top Mattresses

    • Non-pillow top mattresses are also known as firm mattresses. These typically have innersprings but do not have an extra layer of padding built into the top, which makes them thinner and firmer than their pillow top counterparts. Some firm mattresses are made of latex or foam and allow you to choose the level of firmness using air pockets within the mattress that fill up to accommodate different firmness preferences.

    Benefits

    • Firm mattresses do not wear out as fast as pillow top mattresses and are preferred by many who do not like the "sinking" feeling that comes along with the extra padding. Firm mattresses may also be significantly less expensive than pillow tops, so are ideal for those on a budget.

    Pillow Tops

    • Pillow top mattresses have layers of added padding sewn into the top. The padding's thickness depends on the manufacturer and level of desired softness. Some of the extra bedding may even be heated for additional comfort. Others may have adjustable firmness levels.

    Benefits

    • Pillow tops traditionally offer more comfort than firm mattresses. Pillow top mattresses are thought not to offer as much back support as firm mattresses, but according to BackCare.org and US-Mattress.com, they are also just as good for people with bad backs.
