Twin

• The dimensions of a twin size bed are approximately 39 inches wide by 75 inches long. When choosing a headboard to go with any size bed, you want the headboard to be slightly wider than the mattress. Normally when you go to purchase a headboard it will come in the standard sizes, so there is no guesswork for you. However, if you want to make your own headboard, the dimensions are important. A headboard for a twin size bed should be around 42 inches wide by 39 inches high. Of course, the height might change depending on the thickness of the mattress.

Full

• A full size mattress measures 54 inches wide by 75 inches long. You want this headboard to measure approximately 56 inches wide by 42 inches high. If your bedding is not a standard size, measure from screw holes to screw holes. Take this measurement to the store and compare it to the measurements on the headboard to make sure that it will fit.

Queen

• A queen size mattress measure 60 inches wide by 80 inches long. A queen size bed only varies in measurement from the king size in the width, as the length is usually the same. To purchase or make a headboard for a queen size bed, look for one that has measurements of approximately 62 inches wide. The height can vary greatly for a queen size headboard, as it is a larger bed. If the bed is in a smaller room, look for a headboard that is around 50 inches in height.

King

• The king, being the largest of the beds, can overtake a small room, but it can also be the focal point of a larger room. The king size mattress measures 76 inches wide by 80 inches long. The headboard for a king size bed can vary in height just like the queen. Look for headboards with a width of about 78 inches and a height that fits in with the decor and size of the bedroom.
