Toddler Mattress Vs. Newborn Mattress

Newborn babies spend more than 2/3 of their time asleep, which means that your infant's mattress is an important purchase. As your baby grows into a toddler, his sleep needs change and you might want to transition him into a toddler bed so he can climb in and out on his own. You can either use a newborn mattress in a toddler bed or purchase a different mattress to meet his new needs.
  1. Size

    • Standard newborn mattresses for cribs measure 27-1/4 inches by 51-5/8 inches. A bassinet or miniature crib will have a smaller mattress, but the newborn will transition into the standard-sized crib long before becoming a toddler. Most beds advertised as toddler beds use the exact same size mattress as a standard crib. The exception is if you switch your toddler into a twin-sized bed, which has a mattress that usually measures 39 inches by 75 inches.

    Material

    • A newborn mattress is usually either a hard foam mattress or an innerspring mattress. A toddler mattress, on the other hand, might include a softer type of foam, such as memory foam. This is because newborns cannot sleep on soft mattresses because of the risk of suffocation before they gain full movement of their head and torso. A toddler mattress can be much softer, which your toddler might find to be more comfortable.

    Considerations

    • Your toddler can continue sleeping on the same mattress he used as a newborn. This mattress is slightly firmer than those advertised as toddler mattresses, but your toddler will not know that there is anything better. However, if you are having another newborn who will need the crib mattress, you can purchase a softer mattress for your toddler. Another option is to get a double-sided mattress that is extra firm on one side for a newborn and softer on the other side for a toddler. When using this type of mattress, be careful that your newborn always sleeps on the extra firm side.

    Mattress Cover

    • Newborn mattresses might or might not be made from a waterproof material. Unless your newborn's diaper leaks overnight, you do not generally need to worry about moisture. With a toddler, on the other hand, you will need a waterproof mattress cover for when the child begins potty training. Choose a plastic cover that zips completely around the mattress to protect it.
