The Width of a Full-Sized Bed

A full-sized bed, also called a double bed, is wider than a twin bed by 15 inches. The length of a double bed is about the same as a twin bed, however, and 5 inches shorter than a queen-sized bed. There are some disadvantages and advantages about the width of a full-sized bed.
  1. Dimensions

    • The width of a full-sized bed is 54 inches. That is 5 inches less than a queen-sized one, but more than a twin bed. The length of a standard full-sized bed is 75 inches, but there are extra-long full-sized beds that have a length of 80 inches.

    Advantages

    • One advantage of a double-sized bed is that one person can sleep comfortably. Another is that sheet sets are cheaper than queen-sized bed sets. For small rooms where a queen-sized bed won't fit, a double-sized bed is a better option. Also, many bed frames are adjustable to fit a queen-sized bed if you decide to upgrade to a queen bed in the future. Full-sized mattresses can fit through narrow stairways and hallways, whereas queen-sized or king-sized beds cannot.

    Disadvantages

    • Two people sleeping on a full-sized bed only have 27 inches of sleep space, which is 12 inches less than what one person has on a twin bed mattress. Also, the length of a standard full-sized bed may not offer enough room for some taller people.

    Bed Accessories

    • Full-sized flat sheets are 80-by-94 inches; fitted sheets are 54-by-75 inches for a snug fit. Sheet sets sometimes come with two pillow cases that fit queen-sized pillows and are 20-by-30 inches. Comforters are made for a full-sized bed or for a full/queen bed. Full-sized comforters are 80-by-90 inches, and full/queen comforters are 88-by-88 inches.
