What Mattress Do You Use for a Twin Trundle Bed?

Dimensions

• A twin mattress measures approximately 39-by-75 inches.It is usually labeled as a twin or single mattress. Do not get a twin XL mattress, which is 80 inches long and will not fit in a twin-sized trundle bed. Also do not get a twin mattress confused with a full or double mattress, which is 75 inches long but about 54 inches wide, making it too large for the trundle frame as well.

Depth

• One concern with the trundle mattress going under the bed is its depth. Many pillow-top mattresses have extra layers of padding that make the mattress thicker than a standard one. Standard mattresses are generally no more than 10 inches deep, whereas a pillow-top might be up to 16 inches deep. However, a trundle mattress should not be more than 9 inches deep. Some manufacturers even recommend a depth of 8 inches or fewer. Measure the depth of your trundle bed or check the manufacturer's recommendations before purchasing a mattress.

Bedding

• In most cases, the bedding for the trundle will not fit in the space along with the mattress. Therefore, you will need to store it elsewhere and put it on only when you use the bed. This also keeps the bedding from getting dusty during periods when it is not being used.

Considerations

• Some trundle beds have a design that allows you to raise the height of the trundle so it matches the bed above. If you put them next to each other, this creates a king-sized mattress. If you are planning to use the trundle bed in this way, purchase the same mattress for the top and bottom beds. That way, they will be the same height and comfort level when placed together.
