The Average Futon Length

Convenient, space-saving futons offer an ideal solution if you need an extra bed but don't have the floor space to accommodate it. The futon serves as a chair or couch during the day, then easily folds out to bed-length for nighttime use. Although the traditional futon comes in just two standard sizes, there is another option for those just in need of a twin-size single-sleeper.
  1. Futon Types

    • The classic "bi-fold" futon comes in two sizes: queen and full. The full is the more common size, measuring slightly less than a queen and taking up less space along the wall and into the room when unfolded. You can also use futon chairs, ottomans and three-ways, also known as A-frames.

    Futon Couches

    • When you unfold a futon for the night, you are actually sleeping along the width of the piece. The full-size futon couch is 75 inches wide, without counting the width of the arms. When set up as a bed, it measures 54 inches from the wall to the edge of the frame. The queen size is 80 inches "inside the arms" in width, and 60 inches from wall to edge when unfolded. When set back upright and used as a sofa, a full futon is 36 inches from wall edge to front edge; a queen is 42 inches from wall to edge.

    Futon Chairs

    • Futon chairs can also be used as fold-out beds, with or without an accompanying ottoman, but sleep only one person comfortably. Some have built-in ottomans that slide out; some are sold with ottomans as separate pieces. These chair futons come in two standard sizes: twin and the slightly smaller junior twin. When folded out, the junior-twin chair futon is 28 inches wide (inside the arms) by 54 inches in length. The twin is wider at 39 inches but the same length, 54 inches. For both sizes, the ottoman extends the sleeping-surface length to 75 inches.

    A-Frame Futons

    • An A-frame or tri-fold futon folds up into three sections and comes in twin, full and queen sizes. The twin and full A-frame futons, when folded down as a bed, are 75 inches in length, while the queen is 80 inches long. The average A-frame twin when set up as a couch or loveseat is 39 inches wide; the full 54 inches wide; the queen 60 inches wide.
