Use for Metal Bed Headboards

If you have an old metal headboard that you're thinking about throwing away, repurpose it instead. Put on your thinking cap and you're sure to find some creative uses for it in your home. If it's old and rusty or has chipped, peeling paint, you can turn it into a shabby chic treasure. If you prefer a sleeker look, sand it and give it a fresh coat of paint before repurposing it.
  1. Functional Charm in the Garden

    • Some of the easiest ways to repurpose old metal headboards are found in the garden. For example, you can use an old metal headboard as a trellis simply by leaning the headboard against a wall and burying the legs a few inches into the ground. An old metal headboard can also serve as a decorative fence panel when you prop it up along the front or back of your garden. If you don't mind going to the hardware store and getting out your drill, you can attach a few hinges to the headboard, then attach it to your existing garden fence as a gate.

    Fun Furniture Fixes

    • Repurposing a metal headboard into another piece of furniture requires some work, but the projects aren't difficult. Attach a rusty headboard to the back of a weathered, worn bench as a backrest, giving the old bench a shabby chic look. A metal headboard also makes a terrific table top when you saw off the legs, lay the headboard flat, attach four legs and get a piece of thick glass cut to fit over the top. Depending upon the size of your headboard and the length of the legs, it could be a coffee table, accent table or a even breakfast table.

    Home Accents

    • Use your metal headboard as home decor. Try wiring glass votive holders across one side of it, and prop it up in front of your fireplace for a warm-weather fireplace screen. If your headboard is queen-size or king-size, hang it on the wall over your sofa in place of the expected framed painting. If your bathroom or dresser mirror is small or lacks architectural interest, use a headboard as its backdrop. Hang the headboard on the wall above your vanity or dresser, then secure the mirror to the headboard, allowing the headboard to frame the mirror.

    Finding More Ideas

    • Use your imagination and creativity to find even more uses for your old metal headboard. Visit flea markets and antiques shops to get your creative juices flowing. Ask friends for ideas, and brainstorm with them to see what you can come up with together. If your headboard just isn't right for any of the ideas you come up with, recycle it. A metal recycling center may even pay you for it, depending upon the type of metal your headboard is made of.
