Will a Regular Bed in a Bag Work on a Daybed?

A daybed uses a standard twin-size mattress, so you may be tempted to use a "bed in a bag" set to dress the daybed. Slight differences in style, though, may make it difficult to get the look you want when doing this. You may need to consider a traditional daybed set instead.
  1. Bed in a Bag

    • A bed-in-a-bag set comes with everything you need to set up a new bed. It includes a comforter with matching sheets, pillowcases, pillow shams and, in many cases, a dust ruffle to go around the bottom of the bed. Since twin mattresses only are meant to sleep one person, a twin bed-in-a-bag set only contains one pillowcase and one pillow sham.

    Daybed vs. Twin Bed

    • Although the mattresses are the same size, a daybed does vary from a traditional twin bed. A daybed has a panel or metal head, foot and side boards on three sides of the mattress. A twin bed only has a headboard and footboard. When you place a twin-size comforter on a twin bed, you arrange it so there is an equal amount of overhang on each of the sides. The panel running along the length of the daybed, however, means there is not enough space for this extra overhang. A traditional daybed cover has a smaller width than a twin cover to account for this.

Using a Bed in a Bag for a Daybed

    • Despite the extra width in the comforter included in a bed in a bag, the rest of the components should fit on the daybed without a problem. If you use the dust ruffle, fold in the side of the ruffle that is not shown and tuck it under the mattress. You may tuck some of the side of the comforter into the long area with the panel, but expect to have a bit of extra hang. Choose a design that does not rely on centering the comforter on the bed.

    Disadvantages

    • The larger size of the comforter included in a bed-in-a-bag set is the biggest disadvantage to using this instead of a traditional daybed cover. Another disadvantage is the set may not come with as many pillowcases and shams as you may like, since many people add extra pillows to a daybed. You may adjust for this by purchasing extra pillowcases or pillow shams, or by using a variety of throw pillows.
