King-Size Waterbed Heaters

One of the draws of a waterbed is the ability to control the mattress temperature. You can increase the water temperature in winter months or if your muscles need soothing, and you can lower it in the summer when you want a cooler place to sleep. The heater must be installed properly during the frame assembly, and the bed must be maintained to keep the heater in good working order.
  1. Purpose

    • There are more than 250 gallons of water in a king-size waterbed. A special waterbed heater assembly is essential to heat that much water and create a comfortable sleeping surface. If left unheated, you may experience discomfort in the form of cold temperatures and muscle soreness. King waterbeds are so wide that two separate heating units or a dual heater is necessary.

    Installation

    • The heaters are placed in the center of each side of the bed, directly on top of the decking. The thermostat sensor must be separated from the unit by at least 12 inches, and the cords can be run through the hole between the decking and the corner of the frame. The heater should be tested and then unplugged until after the mattress is installed.

    Troubleshooting and Replacement

    • It will take several hours for the water to come to temperature upon installation, so don't worry that the heater isn't working unless it's been on for more than 24 hours. If the bed temperature doesn't rise or begins to lower even though the heater still appears to be functioning, one or both heating elements may need replacing. You will have to drain the mattress most of the way and then pull it back to access the heater.

    Maintenance

    • The heater is protected by the safety liner, but debris can still find its way to the heater if the bed is not properly maintained. The mattress should be cleaned monthly with a vinyl cleaner, and the sheets and blankets should be kept tucked into the edges of the frame. Mattress water level is of utmost importance to heater maintenance. You should not be able to press down and feel the frame decking; access to the heating element in this manner could result in a burn to skin or the mattress and the destruction of the heater.
