How to Assemble Twin Captains Bed

A captain's bed solves space issues in your bedroom. Some units have optional drawers under the mattress, a book case and cabinets in the headboard or a shelf for decorative items such as lamps or books. It is the perfect bed for a room where two siblings share the room, as this bed gives each sibling their own area for storage.

Instructions

  1. Assembling the Headboard

    • 1

Verify with the store you ordered from as to how many boxes they will deliver. You'll want to verify that you have all the required pieces before beginning this project. When the boxes are delivered, open each box to inspect its contents for the correct number of parts and to make sure that no damaged pieces are inside.

    • 2

Lay out all eight pieces for the headboard. There will be two side panels, one top storage piece for the cabinets and bookshelf and one lower shelf. There will be a front and a back panel, a single wooden bar called the pillow stop and two mounting blocks one each for the left and right sides. The small pieces for the headboard will be together in the hardware box.

    • 3

Insert a small wooden dowel in each of the holes in both side panels and into the holes on both ends of the lower shelf.

    • 4

Attach four of the metal brackets to the sides of the lower shelf. Use the pre-drilled holes as a guide. Insert a 15-mm JCB screw into these holes and use the Allen wrench to tighten these screws.

    • 5

Insert a wooden dowel into each end of the pillow stop bar. Attach a metal bracket at each end of the pillow bar using the 15-mm screws, tighten with the Allen wrench. Insert a wooden dowel into the center hole of the wooden spacer block.

    • 6

Place the left and right side panels on their long ends. The pre-drilled holes should be on the inside of the panels. The wooden support for the rails on both sides should be on the inside of the panels.

    • 7

Attach the lower shelf just above the rail support by inserting the other end of the wooden dowels into the pre-drilled holes in this location. Attach the brackets to the side panels using the 15-mm screws and the Allen wrench. Use this same method to attach the front panel, pillow stop and back panels.

    • 8

Flip the top storage piece upside down on the floor and stand the assembled side panel upside down on top of the top storage piece. Attach these two pieces using the 35-mm screws and tighten with the Allen wrench.

    Assembling the Bed

    • 9

Flip the whole assembly to be right side up. Attach the wooden pull knobs to each door by inserting the pull screw through the inside of the door through the pre-drilled holes and tighten with a Phillips screwdriver.

    • 10

Stand the headboard up on a flat solid surface in the room the bed will go in. Insert one long rail into the highest slot possible on one side of the headboard. The metal "hook" will slide over the pin in the headboard. The metal rail part that forms the lip should go on the inside of the rail, this will be supporting the slats that will hold the box spring and mattress. Insert the second rail into the other side of the headboard. Have someone hold the headboard firmly as adding these rails can cause it to pitch forward.

    • 11

Insert the other end of the rails into the top slots on the foot board. Press down firmly to make sure that the hooks on the long rails are firmly attached to the pins inside the headboard and foot board.

    • 12

Place the slat assembly on the lips of the long rails. Some brands of captain's beds will have pre-drilled holes for you to insert a bolt or screw on either end of each slat to secure it in place. Repeat until all slats are in place, these will support the box spring and mattress.
