The Standard Width & Length of Double Beds

Size

• A twin size mattress measures 39 inches wide and 75 inches long. A double bed is the same length as a twin size mattress but is much wider at 54 inches. This may not provide a remedy to someone who is tall, but it provides for an overall bigger sleeping space where someone tall might be able to stretch out across the bed and fit more comfortably than with a smaller twin size mattress.

Comforter

• A comforter and blanket for a double bed are sold in either a full size or a full/queen size combination, which is slightly larger and can fit both mattress sizes with enough drop off space for both bed sizes. A standard full size comforter will measure 80-by-90 inches. A standard full/queen comforter has slightly different dimensions to suit both mattress types. These comforters measure 88 inches in width and length.

Mattress Foundations

• A double bed needs a properly sized foundation to provide the right amount of support to the mattress. Metal frames, platform beds, daybeds and futons all are available in full-size dimensions. Like all other mattress sizes, a buyer has a choice between a box spring support or a slatted bed base. Box springs can be used only on metal frames and platform beds. Bunk beds also are available in full-size options as well if you need to provide sleeping space for two people.

Mattress Types

• Full size mattresses can be found in a variety of forms that include a spring mattress, foam, latex or memory foam. Latex and memory foam are the most costly of the mattress varieties. A spring mattress is paired best with a box spring support, but also can be used with slats if you prefer. Foam and latex mattress are good fits for slat bed bases because the mattress is able to conform to the slats, providing more support to the sleeper.
