Wrap artificial vines around each pole of the canopy bed to add a natural touch to the room. Select vines with flowers on them for a splash of color. Secure the vine to the top of the pole and wind it around to the bottom.
Give the young girl stickers and allow her to create custom pole decorations by covering them in the pattern of her choice. Use this method if you plan on replacing the canopy bed in later years, because the stickers are difficult to remove. Use small vinyl wall clings as an alternative. They are easy to peel on and off and don't leave residue behind.
Attach a piece of fabric to the top of each pole that flows downward to the floor. Use fabric in a similar color and texture as the canopy that covers the bed. This effect mimics curtains.
Wrap strips of tulle or similar mesh fabric around the pole. Bind one color of fabric around the pole tightly. Wrap a second color loosely around the pole and the first color will show through the mesh.
Paint intricate designs onto the poles with high-gloss acrylics and fine-tipped paintbrushes. This adds visual interest to the bed as well as splashes of color. Let the girl select the colors and pick the general pattern.
Cover them with small glass tiles if the poles' shape and size allow for it. Apply a layer of mosaic cement to the pole and press the glass tiles into place, arranging them in the pattern of choice. Stick to all one color of tile, create pictures with the tile or make colorful patterns.
