The Height of a Box Spring Mattress

A box spring provides a stable foundation for your spring mattress. A box spring is one of several choices a buyer has when deciding on a foundation for a mattress. The height of a box spring can vary, but differences in box spring height don't necessarily change the way your bed feels.
  1. Box-spring Function

    • A traditional box spring is paired with a spring mattress and rests on a steel bed frame. The box spring is a combination of a wood frame, supported with firm, yet slightly flexible coils that provide support and give to the mattress foundation. They absorb impact and help protect the life of your mattress. They are a lightweight material, yet strong and durable. The box spring also raises the height of your mattress, making it easier to get in and out of bed.

    Heights

    • A standard box spring will measure 8 to 9 inches in height. Buyers in many cases also have the choice of a low-profile box spring measuring anywhere from 4.5 to 5.5 inches high. Box springs are occasionally split into two smaller pieces for large beds such as a queen and king-size mattress. The box spring doesn't bend and would not fit through most doorways otherwise.

    Suitability

    • A low or high profile box spring can help meet your bedroom's practical needs. For thick mattresses, a low profile box spring may be better, because the mattress could sit too high on your platform or bed frame if it were placed on a standard box spring. Also, a low-profile box spring may be needed to reveal a low-sitting headboard that is covered by the mattress when used with a standard box spring. Some buyers may simply want to choose the box spring based on aesthetic appearance or personal preference.

    Support Guaranteed

    • The thickness of the box spring has little impact on the support it can provide. Many people may believe that the thicker a box spring is, the stronger it will be. This is not true. The same applies to box spring foundations that are split, as in the cases of a queen- or king-size mattress. A quality, well-built box spring can help extend the life of your mattress whether it is low profile, high profile or split into two.
