How to Make Canopies for Kids' Beds

Trace an 18-inch diameter circle on a piece of plywood. Use a jigsaw to cut out the circle.

Cut out a piece of fabric about 1 inch longer than the size of the circle. Use fabric that coordinates with the design scheme to cover the piece of plywood. This fabric will be used to cover the front and sides of the plywood circle. It will not be the prominent fabric, but should match with the fabric that will cascade over the bed. The back will be attached to the ceiling and therefore will not be visible. Cover the plywood circle with the fabric and use a staple gun to adhere the fabric to the plywood.

Measure for the length of the fabric that will drape over the bed. Measure from the top of the ceiling to the position you want the fabric to land near the bed. You may want the fabric to stop at the top of the bed or you may want the fabric to drape to the floor level. Add a couple of inches to the desired length to account for securing the fabric to the plywood and maneuvering the fabric around the bed. Cut out the fabric.

Staple the fabric to the plywood circle. Start at the back and work your way toward the front by stapling about every 1 inch. Leave a small gap at the front of the plywood circle that is not completely covered with fabric.

Add embellishments to the canopy if desired. A feather boa can help make the canopy more fashionable. Ribbon glued around the edges of the canopy provides a feminine touch for a canopy in your daughter's room. Beads, sequins, stickers or hanging objects can help better define the canopy's theme.

Place the plywood circle on the desired location in the ceiling. Drill the plywood circle into the ceiling with several 1-inch-long drywall screws spaced a few inches apart. Pull on the circle to make sure it doesn't move to ensure safety for your child.

Position the cascading draperies as you prefer. Tug gently on the fabric and spread it around the left side of the bed. Repeat the process for the right side of the bed.
