The Size of a King Headboard

A king-size bed is suitable for a large bedroom. It also provides plenty of space for two people to stretch out and get a good night's rest. A headboard adds a look of sophistication to a bedroom. King-size headboards are specifically designed to work with king-size mattresses. King headboards come in a variety of materials, styles and sizes and should match the other furnishings and décor in the bedroom.
  1. King Mattress Size

    • A standard king-size mattress is 76 inches wide and 80 inches long. (This is different from a California king-size mattress, which is 72 inches by 84 inches.) The standard king is 16 inches wider than a queen-size mattress. A king mattress is the widest mattress available and is approximately the same size as two twin beds put together. Thus, a couple sleeping in a king bed each has the equivalent of his own twin-size bed. A king mattress needs either three standard pillows or two king-size pillows.

    King Headboard Width

    • There is not one standard size of king headboard. However, they all are at least 76 inches wide to accommodate the king mattress. A typical width for a king headboard often ranges from 79 inches to 84 inches. There are a number of styles of headboards, and the exact width of a headboard often depends upon the style.

    Headboard Styles and Height

    • Headboards come in many materials and styles. Wood, leather and iron are commonly used. Some headboards are functional with built-in shelves. All these factors can determine the height of a headboard. For example, a wooden sleigh style headboard is typically a tall headboard and can be more than 60 inches tall. A modern, sleek lower headboard may only be 43 inches tall, while a mid-size leather headboard often ranges from 51 to 54 inches. Thus, there is no standard headboard height, but is often a ranges from approximately 43 to 70 inches.

    Considerations

    • When choosing a headboard, the first thing to consider is your current furnishings. Make sure the headboard material and style match. Also, consider the size of the room. If it is very large, use a large headboard, such as a sleigh bed. The height of the bed is also important. Mattresses can range in thickness, often from 8 to 18 inches, and there are varying heights of bed frames. Ensure the height of the headboard coordinates with the height of the mattress and bed frame. For example, don't use a very tall headboard with a mattress low to the ground.
