How to Make a Bed So a Quarter Bounces Off It

Just about every tough sergeant in almost every old war movie terrified the new recruits by trying to bounce a quarter off their freshly-made beds. Those recruits who failed the bounce test were in for a world of punishment. While you don't need to employ such extreme measures in your home, you can aim to make a very neat bed much like at boot camp. Use a few tricks from military recruits and your bed will pass any inspection.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a fitted bottom sheet onto the mattress. Pull the sheet corners down then around the underside of the mattress to create a smooth surface on the top.

    • 2

Lay the flat top sheet on top of the bed. Line up the hemmed top edge of the sheet with the top edge of the bed. Make sure an even amount of material hangs down on either side of the bed.

    • 3

Tuck the excess fabric underneath the foot of the mattress. Do not pull the sheet out of place on top of the mattress.

    • 4

Grasp one side of the sheet at the side hem about 12 to 16 inches above the foot of the bed. Place the forefinger of your other hand directly on the bottom mattress corner. Pull the sheet up to create a 45-degree angle.

    • 5

Fold the fabric down around the side of the mattress and tuck it smoothly underneath. This creates a hospital corner with a 45-degree angle. Make an identical hospital corner on the other bottom corner of the bed.

    • 6

Tuck the side of the top sheet underneath the mattress all the way up to the top of the bed.

    • 7

Lay a thin blanket on top of the top sheet. Line up the hem and even out the sides just as you did with the top sheet. Make hospital corners on both bottom corners.

    • 8

Place a line of large safety pins along the side hem on both sides of the blanket. Tuck the side edges of the blanket underneath the mattress, pinning the blanket to the underside of the mattress. Tuck and pin one entire side of the blanket, then tuck and pin the other side, pulling the blanket as taut as possible. Leave the top 12 inches on each side unpinned.

Fold the top 12 inches of the blanket down, along with the flat sheet underneath. This will create a neat edge at the top of the bed.
