What is a Daybed?

• Daybeds are a type of twin-size bed. The frame of a daybed has a long backboard and two even, short sides that serve as a headboard and foot board when you are sleeping in it and as the arms when you are utilizing it as a sofa. Daybeds do not have box springs. Instead they feature a spring system that the mattress sits on top of.

Design

• Daybeds can vary greatly in design. Some daybeds have a traditional wire type frame that, while attractive to look at, does not offer much in the way of comfort when the daybed is being used as a sofa. More advanced daybeds may offer a padded backboard and padded end boards that function more like the back and arms of a sofa when the bed is being used for seating.

Pillows and Bedding

• Daybed bedding is unique because it has to be designed differently from regular bedding in order to fit smoothly and keep the appearance of a sofa. Daybed comforters often have trim on the two short sides and the long side that faces the front, but are shorter against the back and do not have trim so they will sit smoothly against the backboard. Large accent pillows are often used in place of the cushions that pad the back of a sofa to create more comfortable seating when leaning back.

Additional Features

• In addition to serving as both a bed and a sofa, some daybeds can go a step further. If you really want to make the most of your space, look for a daybed that has either a trundle bed underneath it, which will provide an additional place for someone else to sleep, or drawers on the bottom. Either of these additional features can make your daybed even more useful and functional.
