How to Decorate a King Headboard

Adding a headboard to your king size bed gives the room a finished appearance. A king headboard can be costly because of its size, and it may also be hard to find one that matches your specific tastes. Transform an old king headboard into something eye-catching or add embellishments to your new one. Decorating the headboard gives you the chance to customize its looks and make it as subtle or attention-grabbing as you desire.

Instructions

Paint your king headboard, which is one of the most basic ways to change or alter its appearance. Sand the surface beforehand and wipe the dust away for better paint adherence. Cover the headboard, whether it’s metal or wood, with high-gloss acrylic paint in the colors of choice. Stick to one color or paint an entire mural across the surface.

Create an eclectic collage appearance on your king headboard with decoupage. Cut enough pictures to cover either the entire headboard or select sections. Use colorful pieces of tissue paper or wrapping paper as an alternative. Attach the paper pieces with decoupage glue. Cover in several layers of clear coat sealant to protect the artwork.

Decorate the built-in shelves of your king headboard if it has them. Place matching baskets on either side of the headboard shelves to conceal bedside items like tissue boxes or medicines. Put a few small accessories on the shelves. Keep both the left and right sides of the shelves matching for an even, consistent appearance.

Wrap items around the posts or through the slats of a king headboard to give it three-dimensional texture. Weave different rows of colorful fabric in and out of the slats. Wind faux plants or vines throughout for a jungle-themed bedroom. Tie elaborate fabric bows from each post for a cottage country feel.

Cut a piece of foam that matches the size of your king headboard backing. Attach it to the headboard. Wrap in fabric that extends from the front to several inches around the back to create a soft, decorative headboard.
