How to Add Firmness to a Soft Mattress

A mattress that is too soft can lead to pain, stiffness and even loss of sleep. Often sleep partners have decidedly different preferences when it comes to the firmness of their mattress. Make your sleeping arrangements comfortable for everyone by adding more firmness to a soft mattress, even if only for one half of the bed.

Instructions

    • 1

Lift the mattress from the box spring, and set it aside.

    • 2

Measure the area that you would like to make more firm. Use the tape measure 1 inch from the edge to the middle for only half, or from side to side and subtract 2 inches for the whole bed. Then, measure the length of the bed, removing 2 inches again.

    • 3

Transfer these measurements to the piece of plywood and mark them with a pencil.

    • 4

Extend the marks on the plywood with a straight edge to make an outline that you can cut.

    • 5

Cut the rectangular wood piece with a circular saw.

    • 6

Sand the corners sides and edges with a hand sander to remove any splinters or rough edges.

    • 7

Place the piece of wood on top of the box spring and center it.

    • 8

Place the mattress on top of the box spring and wooden piece, then make the bed as usual.
