How to Convert Cribs to Toddler Beds

When your baby can stand up unassisted and begins walking, it is time to think about moving her to a toddler bed. Many cribs convert from a baby crib to a toddler bed. To complete the conversion, you must remove the front of the crib and replace it with a toddler rail. A toddler rail is lower than the crib side and only goes halfway down the height of the bed. This prevents the baby from rolling out of the bed.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the sheets from the crib mattress. Remove the mattress from the crib and set it aside. You do not need to purchase a new mattress.

    • 2

Locate the two bolts holding the drop rail or footboard in place. Remove the bolts with an Allen wrench.

    • 3

Lower the footboard or drop rail to the floor and pull it forward, out of the crib frame. Lower the mattress support to the lowest setting.

    • 4

Raise the toddler rail into the crib frame so that the bolt holes in the rail line up with the bolt holes in the frame. Insert the bolts into the holes in the frame and tighten with an Allen wrench. If your toddler rail comes with a wing nut or bolt cover, install those as well.
