How to Build a King Size Headboard Using Louvered Closet Doors

Build a king-size headboard using louvered closet doors for a one-of-a-kind bedroom accessory. Depending on their condition, louvered closet doors can complement a variety of decor schemes. Aged doors with peeling, faded paint may be the finishing touch for a shabby chic apartment, for example, while brand new louvered doors painted a colorful pastel will add a burst of color to a beach-themed home. Converting louvered closet doors to a headboard requires some basic woodworking tools and low-level carpentry skills.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width of the bed frame with the measuring tape. Most king-size mattresses are 76 inches wide, and the frames are from 4 to 8 inches wider.

    • 2

Measure the width of your louvered closet doors and add up the measurements. The Home Depot's Plantation doors, for example, are 24 inches wide, so four of these doors would equal 96 inches. If your doors are not wider than your bed frame and you cannot obtain more doors, center them behind the frame.

    • 3

Refinish, paint or stain your louvered closet doors and let them dry completely, or leave vintage shutters in their natural state for a shabby chic look.

    • 4

Subtract 4 inches from the sum of the louvered doors you measured. Cut two pieces of 1-by-2-inch piece of lumber to this dimension with a circular saw.

    • 5

Lay the closet doors front side down on a flat surface, side by side. Line up one of the cut pieces of lumber along the solid, unlouvered surface along the top of the doors, 2 inches in from the edge. Screw the lumber to the doors every 6 inches with 1/4-inch wood screws.

    • 6

Line up another of the cut pieces of lumber along the solid, unlouvered surface along the bottom of the doors. Screw the lumber to the doors every 6 inches with 1/4-inch wood screws.

    • 7

Find the studs behind the bed with a stud finder and lightly mark their locations with a pencil on the baseboard.

    • 8

Have an assistant hold the king-size headboard above the baseboards, centered behind the area where the bed will be located, with the two attached pieces of lumber pressed against the wall.

    • 9

Screw the louvered doors to the studs with #6 drywall screws to secure the headboard to the wall. Secure the screws through the areas reinforced by the 1-by-2-inch lumber. Use one screw at the top of the headboard and one at the bottom for every stud you encounter.
