How to Build a Canopy Netting Around a Bed

A netting canopy is a sheer bed canopy traditionally used to keep mosquitoes and other insects away from the sleeper. You can now use it as a decorative accent that brings a custom look to the bed and the room. Netting comes in a variety of colors, but white will give the canopy the most airy appearance. Hanging the netting from an embroidery hoop provides an easy way to suspend the canopy.

Things You'll Need

  • 4 netting panels 60 inch wide, 109 inches long
  • Sewing machine
  • 18-inch embroidery hoop
  • Decorative ribbon or wire
  • Electric drill
  • Ceiling hook

Instructions

    • 1

Fold the top edges of each netting panel over by 1 inch. Sew the fold in place along its bottom edge to create an open-ended hem that resembles a curtain rod space.

    • 2

Unscrew the screw on the outer embroidery hoop. Remove the inner hoop, and set it aside. Slip all four panels of netting over the outer hoop by sliding the end through the open hems you created.

    • 3

Arrange the fabric so the panels are equally distributed along the length of the hoop. Tie a piece of ribbon or wire to the hoop by tying one end of the ribbon between two panels. Tie the other end opposite the first and between two panels.

    • 4

Replace the inner hoop. Screw the outer hoop back together, and tighten the screw until the fabric is held securely in place.

    • 5

Drill a hole in the ceiling above the bed. Screw the ceiling hook into the hole. Hang the canopy from the hook. Arrange the netting so it falls evenly on all four sides of the bed.
