How to Find a Leak in a Softside Water Bed

Softside water bed mattresses, sometimes referred to as mattress bladders, are made of thick vinyl. Leaks are uncommon, but they do happen. Holes in the body of the mattress are usually caused by debris or pet claws pressing against the vinyl, and they are easily fixed with a patch kit. The corners and edges feature leak-proof seams; leaks caused by seam defects are generally covered under the manufacturer's warranty and can't be fixed with a patch kit. To determine the method of repair, you first need to locate the leak.

Instructions

    • 1

      Unplug the water bed heater.

    • 2

Soak up all water surrounding the mattress.

    • 3

Press your thumbs and index fingers together to make a teardrop shape, then push your hands against the mattress corners until you make contact with the frame beneath. Continue along the seams until you see a small bead of water form on the surface of the mattress.

Cover the mattress with dry sheets or paper towels to further pinpoint the leak. Tuck paper towels around the edges and beneath the mattress edge and wait for a wet mark to appear. Press on the bed to release some water from the leak.

Circle the hole with a marker.
