Draw the shape of the butterfly on a piece of 1/2-inch plywood. Keep the drawing simple to make it easier to cut out. If desired, use a photograph of your favorite type of butterfly for reference or create your own butterfly shape. The width of the butterfly’s wings should be the same as the width of the mattress. Make the height of the headboard equal the height of the bed plus 2 feet.
Cut the drawn shape out using a jigsaw. Sand the edges of the butterfly with a piece of medium-grit sandpaper to remove any rough edges. Clean away the sawdust using a damp rag or dry paintbrush.
Paint the base color of the butterfly using flat wall paint. Use two coats of paint, if necessary, for full-coverage. Let the paint dry overnight between coats. After painting a base coat on the butterfly, add additional colors to decorate it.
Spray the surface of the butterfly with an acrylic sealant. Use an even coating of the spray, following the directions on the packaging. Leave the sealant to dry overnight.
Attach the butterfly to the wall using a hammer and nails. Position the butterfly 1 foot off the ground. Hammer the nails through the plywood into the wall, keeping the nails 3/4 inches in from the edge of the butterfly. Place one nail every 9 inches to secure it.
Position the bed frame and mattress in the center of the butterfly.
