DIY Decorative Headboards

A headboard can make an otherwise bland room look finished. Headboards can be made out of virtually anything. One popular type of decorative DIY headboard is the upholstered headboard. The headboard is made from a few simple materials. Do-it-yourselfers can customize the headboard with a fabric that will match their bedroom colors and design. The fabric can be changed periodically as the homeowner’s style changes. Once the headboard is finished, it is hung directly on the wall behind the bed.

Instructions

    • 1

Mark the desired headboard shape and size on the plywood sheet with a pencil. As you decide on the headboard size, make sure it matches the width of your bed.

    • 2

Cut the plywood sheeting to size with a jigsaw. Sand the edges of the wood with sandpaper so that wood splinters do not poke through the fabric during use.

    • 3

Cut the foam to fit the decorative headboard. You can have this done for free while at the store or you can cut it yourself with a knife. You will want to purchase foam that is at least two inches thick.

    • 4

Purchase batting and decorative upholstery fabric in the color and style of your choice. Use the measurements from the headboard and then add an additional 6 inches on each side. This will allow the batting and fabric to wrap around the back of the headboard and be stapled into place.

    • 5

Cut the batting and fabric to size with fabric scissors.

    • 6

Lay the batting face down on the ground. Smooth it out. Place the foam on top of it and the plywood piece on top of that. Pull the sides of the batting up around the plywood and staple them in place with a staple gun. Repeat this process with the fabric. If needed, iron the fabric before stapling it in place.

Attach the headboard to the wall with flush mounts. Screw the flush-mounted hardware into both the headboard and the studs of the wall. Lift the headboard into place so the flush mounts meet together. The headboard should be secure on the wall. Push the bed into place in front of the headboard.
