How to Get a Double Bed Upstairs

Moving into a new place is an exciting venture, but the prospect of getting a double bed upstairs can dampen the enthusiasm. To get the job done, gather your strongest allies, also known as your family and friends, to help with the heavy lifting. While moving the bed, make sure to slowly, lift with the knees and remain in constant communication with your moving partners. As each piece of the bed is placed upstairs, remember to position the items as far back into the room as possible to prevent yourself and fellow movers from stumbling over other scattered objects.

Instructions

Use a measuring tape to measure the bed, box spring, headboard and frame. Also, measure the height and width of the doorways and stairs. Compare the results with the measurements of the bed, box spring, headboard and frame. Learn the moving route, including the number of steps you’ll have to navigate, the quality of the steps and turns in the stairs. Explain the route to the individuals helping you during the move. Use a digital camera to take detailed pictures of the bed before dismantling it. The pictures will serve as a reference point when its time to reconstruct the bed.

Remove all the linens from the bed, including comforters, sheets and pillows. Put them aside neatly for easy retrieval.

    • 3

Dismantle the bed, so it can be moved in sections, by disconnecting the headboard, setting the mattress aside, removing the box spring and breaking down the frame. Keep all screws and small, loose parts in a plastic container.

    • 4

Wrap the headboard, mattress and box spring separately in canvas or furniture pads to keep the bed safe from punctures, tears or scratches during the move.

    • 5

Carry the smaller sections of the bed upstairs. Move the box spring up the stairs before moving the mattress, since the box spring goes underneath. Have movers lift the box spring and mattress, so it's propped up on one of its longest sides, and slide it up the stairs along the edges of the steps. For short staircases, fashion boards into a ramp to slide the mattress and box spring upstairs.
