Do Vinyl Mattress Covers Make You Sweat?

Vinyl mattress covers have some advantages over standard fabric mattress covers, such as stain prevention and reducing allergies. Since vinyl mattress covers are not made of fabric, though, they do not breathe the way that fabric mattress covers do, which may cause some people to sweat while sleeping.
  1. Benefits

    • Vinyl mattress covers have several advantages over traditional fabric covers. Since dust mites cannot get through the vinyl and into the mattress, vinyl covers provide a more allergen-free environment for sleeping, and the covers also prevent bed bugs from burrowing into the mattress. Liquids cannot penetrate the vinyl either, making these covers ideal in rooms where spills may occur or for sleepers who have issues with bed-wetting.

    Why You Sweat

    • A vinyl mattress cover can prevent liquids and insects from entering the mattress because of the solid surface of the material. This differs from fabric covers, which are made up of separate threads and have small spaces throughout the material. Due to this difference, vinyl mattress covers do not breathe or allow air to pass through. This means that your body heat is held closer to your body, which makes many people sweat.

    Covering the Cover

    • If you need to put a vinyl mattress cover on a bed to prevent allergies, bed bugs or damage due to bed-wetting but don’t like the idea of sweating all night, you can place a secondary mattress cover over the top of the vinyl cover. This creates a thick fabric barrier between the vinyl and the sheet. If you don’t have a fabric cover, another option is to use an extra comforter or blanket on top of the vinyl beneath the sheet. The vinyl still makes the sleeping environment warmer, but the more distance you have from the vinyl, the less likely you are to sweat.

    Cleaning Vinyl Covers

    • One of the biggest advantages of vinyl covers is the ability to wipe the covers down if an accident occurs. When you remove the sheets and blankets from the bed to wash them, wipe the vinyl cover down with a wet rag. If there has been an accident, such as someone wetting the bed, clean the cover with a soapy rag then use a wet rag to rinse the soap off.
