Murphy Bed

• A Murphy bed is the most traditional type of hideaway bed and is an extremely effective space-saving option. It is ideal for a studio apartment or a small bedroom because the bed is hinged at one end, so it folds up into an alcove in the wall. During the day, you can fold up your bed to save valuable floor space. At night, you simply pull the bed down to sleep. Some Murphy beds have doors in front of them to give the appearance of a closet, while others fold up flush with the wall surface. Convertible Sofa

• A convertible sofa is another common type of hideaway bed, and is one of the most versatile options because it serves dual purposes in a room. When folded up, it is a comfortable sofa and when unfolded it becomes a bed. You can find convertible sofas in a variety of colors, patterns and materials, so there are options to match most décor styles. Most convertible sofas come with a full or queen size mattress, but you can find twin and king size options as well. Because it serves as a couch as well as a bed, a convertible sofa is ideal for a living room or family room that serves double duty as a guest room when family and friends visit from out of town.

Futon

• Like a convertible sofa, a futon serves dual purposes as a bed and a place to sit. It is available in two main styles: a futon sofa and a futon chair. You unfold the futon to create a flat surface for the bed, but unlike a convertible sofa, it does not feature a traditional mattress. Instead, the mattress usually consists of foam and batting, which does not always provide the most effective support. You can find futons with wood or metal frames, and the mattresses are typically contained in a removable covers that come in a variety of colors and patterns. A futon is ideal for college students in a cramped dorm room or apartment where it helps save space.

Trundle

• A trundle bed converts from one bed to two. The bed usually consists of a traditional frame made of wood or metal, but a second bed is located beneath the first with rollers on the bottom so you can easily pull it out. As a result, it allows you to provide two beds in a room without wasting valuable floor space during the day. In most cases, trundle beds are twin-sized so they are an ideal choice for a small, shared children’s bedroom. It can also work well in a guest bedroom when you need to accommodate two people.
