How to Measure for Deep Pocket Bed Sheets

Traditional mattresses were relatively thin, and nearly any sheet in the correct mattress size would fit around the edges and slightly under the mattress. Pillow top mattresses, especially those with a layer of padding on both sides of the main mattress body, are much thicker and require deep pocket sheets. Sizes vary with each manufacturer, and not all sheets labeled as featuring deep pockets will fit thick mattresses. Your best bet is to measure before you buy a set to ensure the sheet corners won't slip off the mattress.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all bedding from the mattress.

    • 2

Lay a tape measure across the width of the mattress, beginning and ending at the outer edges. Measure the length of the mattress from each outer edge.

    • 3

Place your hand lightly on top of the edge of the mattress. Measure the distance from the top of the box spring to the crease between the mattress and your hand.

    • 4

Purchase sheets in your mattress size that are designed to fit the depth measurement. Check your mattress size dimensions against the dimensions listed on the sheet packaging.
