How to Make a King Size Arch Shaped Upholstered Headboard

Making a custom headboard gives you the ability to redo your bedroom to meet your decorating style. However, the cost to pay someone to make one for your is exorbitant. By using plywood, you can make your own headboard that meets your custom needs, with out the hefty price tag of paying a professional. Add a curve to the plywood and fabric to create your own upholstered arch headboard for your king-sized bed.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 plywood sheets, 2 by 3 1/2 feet
  • 4 plywood strips, 4 by 18 by 1/2 inches
  • 24 screws, 1 inch
  • Pencil
  • Jigsaw
  • Medium-grit sandpaper
  • Cotton batting
  • Scissors

  • Fabric, 3 by 8 feet

Instructions

      Place two pieces of 2- by 3 1/2-foot plywood next to one another on a flat work surface to create a 2- by 7-foot rectangle. Position the rectangle so the 7-foot side is facing you.

      Attach the two pieces of plywood together using four pieces of 4- by 18- by 1/2-inch plywood strips. Center the plywood strips along the seam of the two plywood rectangles from step 1. Space the strips evenly down the seam. Drill six 1-inch screws through each of the four pieces directly into the plywood, spacing them 3 inches apart.

      Turn the plywood sheets over. Draw an arched shape on the top of the plywood, stretching from side to side and using as much of the plywood as possible.

      Cut the arched shape out using a jigsaw. Sand the cut edges using medium-grit sandpaper to remove the rough surface.

      Place sheets of cotton batting over top of the plywood sheets. Cut the batting with scissors to match the shape of the plywood. Attach the batting to the plywood using spray adhesive. Let the adhesive dry for three to five hours.

      Cut a piece of fabric to 3 by 8 feet. If necessary, cut two smaller pieces of fabric and sew them together with a sewing machine.

      Place the fabric on your work surface face down. Place the batting side of the plywood on top of the fabric. Wrap the fabric over the edge of the plywood and use a staple gun to secure it. Pull the fabric taught as you go. If desired, fold the fabric in 1/2-inch pleats as you go to give it a gathered look.

      Hold the fabric-covered headboard up to the wall where you want the bed positioned. This requires the use of a joist or a several assistants. If possible, center the headboard on a stud. You can find studs using a stud finder device. Position the bed 20 inches off the ground.

      Attach the headboard to the wall using a nail gun and 2-inch nails. Place one nail every 6 inches to create a grid pattern on it. Start at the top center of the headboard, 6 inches from the edge. Expand the grid from this point.

      Apply hot glue to the back of 1/2-inch buttons. Press the buttons on top of each of the nail heads to cover them. Let the glue dry for three to five minutes and then set up your bed frame and mattress as normal.
