Sand the surface of a standard 36-by-80-inch door using medium-grit sandpaper. Sand the door in a circular motion to remove surface debris and old paint. Continue to sand the door until all paint is removed. Move to a finer-grit sandpaper as you go. Remove the paint from the front and back of the door. Either do this by hand or use an electric sander..
Dust any paint chips or sawdust from the surface of the door. Use a dry paintbrush to brush it away or a damp cloth to wipe it away.
Paint or stain the surface of the door to match your room's decor. If you use paint, apply one to two coats of flat wall paint to fully cover the door. Let the paint dry overnight between layers. For stain, paint the stain on with a paintbrush and then immediately wipe the surface of the stain with a clean rag. Cover the entire door and let it dry overnight.
Locate two studs on the wall in the area you want the mounted headboard. Run a stud finder along the wall until it beeps. Alternatively, use your hand to knock on the wall. Keep knocking around the wall until the wall no longer sounds hollow. Mark the studs over a horizontal 80-inch span. Most modern walls have a stud every 16 inches. Older walls have a more sporadic spacing, so the number of studs in the 80 inches may vary. However, for the modern wall, you will find five or six studs over the 80-inch space, depending on where you start.
Hang two wall brackets on each stud. On each stud, place one bracket at 28 inches and the second bracket at 60 inches. Attach the brackets using the hardware that comes with them. Attach the screws into the drywall and studs using an electric screwdriver.
Attach mounting brackets to the back of the door using the same spacing you used for the wall brackets. Attach the brackets by screwing the screws directly into the door.
Hang the door on the wall by sliding the mounting brackets into the wall brackets. Place the bed in front of the door.
