Sketch the general shape of the desired headboard on a piece of paper. Look at the sketch to determine if the shape is something that can easily be cut from plywood. Adjust the sketch as necessary. Choose abstract shapes and designs, simple circles and squares, or a shape, such as a drum set or a guitar, that will appeal to the boy. Avoid tight angles.
Draw the shape on a piece of one-half-inch plywood. The size of the headboard depends on the size of your mattress and your design. The headboard should be at least as wide as the mattress, and stand a minimum of 18 inches higher than the top of the mattress to be easily seen. For example, if you have a full mattress and the top of the mattress is 30 inches off the ground, make the headboard a minimum of 53 inches wide and 48 inches high.
Cut the plywood shape out using a jigsaw. For difficult angles, use a rotary tool. Sand all cut edges to remove splinters, using a medium-grit sandpaper.
Paint the surface of the plywood structure using wall paint. Start with a solid color for the base coat. Let the paint dry overnight. Apply additional coats of paint as necessary for full coverage. Once the base coat is complete, add details to the headboard. For example, if you created a circular headboard, add a skull and crossbones. Allow the paint to dry overnight undisturbed.
Position the headboard against the wall where you want it. Use a hammer and nails to attach it to the wall. Place the nails one-half inch from the edge of the headboard, placing one every 6 inches around the headboard. Position your mattress in front of the completed headboard.
