How to Lay Slats Across a Bed Frame

Different bed frames feature different methods of supporting a mattress. Some have metal spring frames that go directly under the mattress, while others have slats that support an enclosed box spring. If you have the latter type, you need to lay the slats properly so that they support the box spring adequately. If the slats slip off of the bed rails, the box spring will crash to the floor, possibly damaging the box spring, the floor and you.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the inside distance between the two bed rails. Each bed rail should have a smaller rail attached to the lower inside surface. The top of this smaller rail is the surface on which the ends of the slats will rest.

    • 2

Measure the length of the slats. They should be 3/16- to 1/4-inch shorter than the distance between the inside faces of the bed rails. If they are too long, trim them to the correct length with a handsaw. If they are too short, you will have to get new slats.

    • 3

Lay the first slat between the bed rails a few inches away from the headboard. Lay the second slat at the other end of the bed rails, the same distance from the foot board.

    • 4

Distribute the rest of the slats along the bed rails, leaving an even distance between each slat. You should have enough slats so that there is no more than 16 inches between each slat.

    • 5

Lay the box spring on top of the slats so that it is centered between the bed rails, the head board and the foot board.

    • 6

Put the mattress on top of the box spring.
