How to Collapse a Metal Bed Frame

The metal bed frame is the most basic support for your box spring and mattress. Sturdy and space-saving, a metal bed frame can be used alone or connected to a decorative headboard. They're designed for simple setup with minimal tools, so even a beginner should have no problem with collapsing a metal bed frame. When it's time to move, change rooms or simply get a new bed, you'll need to collapse the metal bed frame.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the mattress and box springs from the metal bed frame. Lean them against the wall or carry them into another room so you have room to work.

    • 2

Unscrew the bolts that connect the metal bed frame to the headboard. Set the bolts and nuts aside in a plastic bag so you don't lose them. Pull the headboard away from the metal frame to get it out of the way and prevent it from getting scratched as you collapse the frame.

    • 3

Remove the end caps from the edges of the end rails using a flat-head screwdriver. End caps protect bedding from rough metal edges. Pry them off gently so you don't scratch the finish. Put them in the hardware bag with the bolts.

    • 4

Separate the two sides of the metal bed frame. Simply push the sides of the frame toward each other, which will cause the peg and hole system on the top and bottom of the frame to disengage. Guide the metal peg along the groove toward the opening. When the metal peg lines up with the hole, pull the two pieces apart. Repeat at the other end of the metal frame. There should be two pieces of bed frame now -- two long sides with cross arms at the top and bottom of each.

Remove any castors or wheels from the bed frame legs. The wheels may snap out if you push on a release tab, or you may need to unscrew them, depending on the bedframe style. Put them in the hardware bag with the bolts and end caps.

Collapse the cross pieces so they rest parallel with the frame's long end pieces. Most metal frame beds have the cross pieces set on a swivel so they can be extended or collapsed with just a little pressure. Tie a piece of yarn or string around each end of the collapsed pieces to prevent them from swinging open as you move them.

Tie the hardware bag to one of the frame pieces so it won't get lost in the move and you'll have the hardware ready when you set up the bed in the new location.
