How to Connect a King Frame to Fit Twin Beds That Split Apart

As the cruise ships have discovered, one of the most flexible ways to comfortably sleep two people is to have twin beds for those who do not want to share a bed, which can easily be converted into a king bed for those who do. A standard king frame can be used for this purpose, and merely requires a little bit of sawing and the installation of some new support pieces to ensure that the bed remains upright no matter its configuration. Locking the two twin beds together will ensure that the beds do not separate the sleepers.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all mattresses and bedding from the king bed frame. Measure the head and foot of the king bed frame and determine the exact center. Mark the center on both ends with the pencil. Cut the frame in half along the marking using the saw.

    • 2

Cut the wood boards to match the length of the twin bed. Measure the width of one of the twin mattresses and transfer that measurement to the half of the bed frame. Position one of the cut wood boards at that distance from the uncut side. Predrill two holes into each end of the new board through the head and foot boards of the twin frame. Attach the new board to the frame with 3-inch wood screws. Repeat for the other half of the frame.

Turn the twin bed frames over and position two of the furniture legs in the twin bed frame corners without leg support. Cut a smaller piece of wood to match the existing legs if there are no suitable furniture legs available. Predrill holes through the leg brackets on the commercial legs or down through the bed frame and into the wooden leg if using a wood block. Attach the legs to both beds using the 3-inch wood screws.

Position the twin bed frames next to each other as they were when they were a king-sized bed. Place one of the latches at the foot of the bed so that half of the latch is on one of the bed frames and the other half is on the the other frame. Predrill holes in the latch attachment spots and attach the latch halves to the bed frames with the 1-inch wood screws.
