Personalize your headboard using stencil patterns, pictures or words. During the planning phase, make sure you have a pencil, level, masking tape or spray adhesive, stencil brushes (sponges, cotton balls or foam rubber will also do), paint and paper towels.
Ensure that the wall above the headboard is clean and smooth before applying the stencil. Paint over cracks and small depressions with a layer of latex or oil-based paint. Cover the bed with a large towel or sheet to avoid splashing paint on the headboard or mattress.
Mark with pencil the areas where you want the stencil to frame the headboard. Position and secure your stencil in the area above or around the headboard with masking tape or stencil adhesive.
Dab, tap or swirl the paint inside the stencil opening, using a brush. Consider applying stencils to the headboard itself with border designs such as flowers and vines.
Select a piece of colorful fabric, old clothing or curtains that matches the décor of your room or color scheme of your sheets and comforter. Choose fabric that is approximately 72 to 84 inches long if hanging near the ceiling or draping as a crown framing the headboard.
Mark with pencil the placement of the brackets on the wall. Place them as high or low as you prefer. Place a level against the wall to ensure that the brackets will be evenly spaced to support both ends of the rod. Use a power drill to install drywall anchors and screws to hold the brackets in place. Install an adjustable mounting bracket for drapery crowns, which project 4 1/2 to 7 inches from the wall.
Insert a curtain rod into the brackets. Drape the fabric over the rod so it gathers around and over the headboard. Avoid hanging heavy comforters, rugs or blankets that may weigh down the pole.
