How to Dress Up Upholstered Beds

When you think of upholstered furniture, a couch or armchair probably come to mind. But a bed can be upholstered, as well. The headboard -- and sometimes the foot board and the side rails -- can be padded and covered with fabric. This can give a bed an elegant look. But like any other furniture, an upholstered bed can begin to look dated. If you have an upholstered headboard that you would like to redo, consider recovering it. This can be much less expensive than buying a new headboard and can yield a look that you like much better.

Instructions

Cover your upholstered headboard with a sheer fabric that permits the underlying upholstery to show through. An iridescent sheer fabric such as chiffon or organza can give your bed an elegant glimmering appearance. Sheers tend to be fragile, so secure the fabric just at the top and the back so that you can lift it up and away from the headboard at night. When you make the bed in the morning, pull the fabric down and tuck it behind the pillows for display during the day. Choose a color that complements your current headboard. Staple or use upholstery tacks to secure the fabric to the headboard.

Tack a length of soft and lush faux fur or a colorful feather boa to the top and sides of your upholstered headboard. If you don't want to pierce the upholstery, apply removable double-sided fabric adhesive tape to secure the fur or feathers.

Cover your upholstered headboard with a dark fabric. Trim the edges with a wide satin craft ribbon that's wired. After you've secured the craft ribbon all along the side rails and the edge of the headboard, cut another length of ribbon and tie a large bow. Center the bow at the top of the headboard, and staple it in place. if you have enough ribbon, run it along the top of the foot board, as well.
