Are All Junior Beds the Same Length?

Evidence of beds date back as far as recorded human history. Early versions of beds consisted of pine straw or some other form of padding, and throughout the ages household beds transformed from primitive sleeping quarters to plush mattresses. Junior beds are designed for children, and although bed styles might vary, their dimensions are universal.
  1. Sizes

    • Although the exact size of a junior bed might vary according to the bed design, the industry standard size is 2-feet-6-inches wide by 5-feet-9-inches long. Although the shape of a junior bed can vary from the traditional rectangle to an oval design, the basic dimensions are relatively the same.

    Styles

    • Junior beds come in three primary styles, but other styles may be custom made or developed by independent mattress companies. The primary styles include a junior bed with railings, junior bed without railings and a crib that can be transformed into a junior bed, also known as a convertible crib. The exact style of these beds can vary dramatically. For example, a junior bed without railings may feature a platform design, which is when the mattress is set low to the ground and features storage compartments underneath the bed, or a bunk bed featuring two junior beds stacked on top of each other. However, a bunk bed always features guards to protect your child from rolling off the mattress. Aesthetically, junior beds may be designed to look like a race car or princess castle.

    Price

    • Like adult beds, junior beds feature a wide range of prices based on materials used. At the time of publication, the average price of a junior bed ranges from $200 to $300; however, junior beds might cost upward of $600. The price of a junior bed depends not only on mattress materials but also the bed design.

    Considerations

    • The purpose of a junior bed is to streamline the transition process of sleeping in a crib to sleeping in a standard bed. If you wish to save money in the long run, purchase a convertible crib that can be transformed into a junior bed once your child outgrows the need for railings.
