Hanging a Girl's Loft Bed From the Ceiling

Whether the girl is a college freshmen or a daring 8-year old, hanging her loft bed from the ceiling will immediately make her room impressive. In addition to the benefits of having a cool room, removing the bed and frame completely from the floor will free up the space underneath. Without having to worry about the legs, as with most loft beds, the floor plan of the room underneath need only incorporate a ladder, or the ladder can be stored elsewhere when not in use. Installing a bed from the ceiling is easiest with exposed beams or drywall ceilings.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the studs in the sections of the ceiling in which you will be installing the bed. Remove any ceiling panels if necessary, and locate the studs in the ceiling above them. Mark the location of each side of the studs. Measure the dimensions of the bed, and mark four positions on the studs that are relatively close to the four corners of the bed and the place you wish to install the bed.

    • 2

Drill a hole into each of the four markings using a drill bit that is smaller in diameter than the diameter of the eyehook threads. Insert a 1-inch eyehook into each hole, and rotate it clockwise to tighten it into the ceiling. Pass the blade of a screwdriver through the hole in the eyehook if hand tightening gets difficult and rotate the eyehook using the screwdriver. Stop tightening once the eyehook's eye reaches the level of the ceiling. Repeat for all four eyehooks and corners.

    • 3

Open a 1-inch caribiner, and pass it through the last link in one of the lengths of chain. Pass the open caribiner through the ceiling eyehook, and close the caribiner.

    • 4

Drill a hole -- using the same procedure used in the ceiling -- into the top of the bed in each corner if the bed is made of wood. Attach an eyehook in each hole in the same manner as before. Pass another caribiner through the eyehook mounted to the bed and attach it to the end of a hanging chain. Repeat for the other chains.

    • 5

Wrap the ends of each chain around the frame of the bed if the bed is made of metal, and secure the link at the end of the chain with a link on the chain further up using the 1-inch caribiners, skipping the eyehook in this case.

Set the carpenter's level on the mattress and adjust the level of the bed by unclipping each chain from the caribiner and raising the caribiner up the chain by one link. Continue adjusting in this manner by raising and lowering the various corners until the bed is completely level.
