How to Change Your Bed Posts to Make a Canopy Bed

Canopy beds often add privacy and a sense of romance to a bedroom. These luxurious beds have a fabric ceiling and curtains hung from their sides. Lovers can pull the curtains closed for additional privacy. You can build a canopy bed from scratch, but if you already own a four-poster bed, you can easily convert it to a canopy bed.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure 3 inches down from each bed post, and mark the spot. Measure the horizontal distance between the marks on two of the posts, and write down the measurement. Repeat for the other two posts. Measure the vertical distance between the posts as well. The marks for vertical and horizontal distance should overlap

    • 2

Measure the end of a canopy rod. Make a hole in each post where you marked it; the hole must be big enough to fit two canopy rods. Measure the length of your canopy rods, and cut them with a saw if necessary to match the measurements you took. Sand the ends of the rods to round them.

    • 3

Screw one rod into two posts. Check that the rod is level. Repeat for each rod and post until the canopy frame is completely installed.

    • 4

Paint the canopy rods if desired. Wait 24 hours for the paint to dry.

    • 5

Hang curtains from the rods on the sides of your bed. Place a canopy across the top of your bed. Change the curtains and canopies periodically to match the seasons, if desired.
