Turning a Mirror Frame Into a Headboard

Mirrors come in several shapes, including rectangular and oval. The tri-mirror frame — or a landscape frame — are artistic pieces with carved wooden edges mounted over the mirror glass. It is a disappointment when an antique mirror gets broken. If you completely clear the glass from the frame, however, you may be able to salvage the piece. You can turn the heirloom mirror frame into a sturdy headboard for any bed in your home as a useful recycling project.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the opening or openings of the mirror frame with a measuring tape. Write the measurements on a piece of paper and subtract 1/2 inch from each number. Cut a piece of plywood or pegboard to the measurements using a jigsaw or circular saw. The cloth and batting cover will make up for the difference in the measurement.

    • 2

Flatten out a piece of batting on your work surface. Center the wood panel on top of the batting. Wrap the batting over one side of the panel and secure it in place with a staple gun. Staple the batting every 3 or 4 inches on each side at the back of the wood panel. Continue wrapping and stapling the batting around the entire piece of wood to smoothly cover the front of it.

    • 3

Place a piece of fabric, right-side down, on a flat work surface. Lay the wood panel, batting side down, on the fabric piece.

    • 4

Pull the sides of the fabric tightly around the sides of the batting-covered panel and staple it to the back of the wood. Smooth the corners of the fabric to create even corners on a rectangular shaped frame. Staple the top and bottom of the fabric to the wood.

    • 5

Use a stud finder to locate studs in the wall against which the headboard will stand. Mark the wall and attach wall brackets using a drill and wood screws. Measure the width of the distance between brackets and mark the same space on the top of the mirror frame.

    • 6

Set the fabric-covered wood panels into the open frame. Secure the panels in place with wood screws in each corner and the sides of the frame.

    • 7

Attach the brackets to the top of the mirror frame headboard with wood screws and the power drill. Line up the headboard brackets with the wall brackets.Secure the headboard to the brackets on the wall.
