Durability is an important concern in the construction of wood furniture. Eucalyptus wood is as hard as oak and often is used in the construction of outdoor furniture. It weathers better than other types of wood, such as teak, which also commonly is used for outdoor furniture projects. Although weathering is not really a concern for a headboard, it does provide a further indication of the durability of the wood for permanent furniture.
The age of the eucalyptus wood you use can make a difference in the quality of the headboard you produce. Generally speaking, eucalyptus wood tends to make a better building material when taken from older trees. Young eucalyptus trees do not provide the same level of quality that an older tree will have. The wood also needs to be well-seasoned once cut. If it is not seasoned, it can warp and crack.
To strengthen the wood used to build your headboard, the eucalyptus should be treated with a high-quality sealant to further harden it. Even though your headboard will not be sitting outside, a sealant helps to ensure that the wood does not weather because of the accumulation of moisture inside the house. If you don't treat the wood, it will fade and turn a dark gray hue, similar to teak wood. Outdoor eucalyptus furniture sometimes is treated with Polisten, a sealant that also protects against fungus and mold.
Eucalyptus wood needs to be treated regularly to last as long as possible. Properly maintained eucalyptus wood can last more than 100 years. Eucalyptus wood is typically drier than other woods such as teak, and regular oil treatments are necessary to maintain the proper moisture level of the wood. If you don't mind the extra maintenance, eucalyptus wood can provide a suitable building material for your headboard or other furniture.
