How to Make a Platform Bed Frame With Casters

Creating a platform bed is a method of making a raised bedding support without having a bed frame or headboard. By securing casters to the bottom of the platform, you add mobility to the bed, allowing you to move it easily when the need arises for repositioning. You can save money on bedding material with a platform bed, as the firm platform provides enough support to do away with a bed spring -- a platform bed needs only the mattress to provide a comfortable sleeping surface. After building the platform, just center the bed on top. The weight of the mattress will keep it in place.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length and width of the bed mattress to determine the size of the platform you need for support. Add 3 inches to the length measurement.

    • 2

Cut two 2-by-4-inch planks to the adjusted length measurement, using a table saw. Cut an additional two planks to match the width measurement of the bed.

    • 3

Create a frame for your platform using the cut planks. Place the two width planks between the two length planks to form a rectangle, with each corner making a 90 degree angle. Nail the frame together at the joints using 10d nails, placing two nails through each length piece into the end of the width pieces at each corner. Stagger the nail placement slightly to prevent splitting the planks.

    • 4

Cut three more planks to fit the width of the bed. Place them between the length boards, spaced equally throughout the frame, with one running across the frame center. Nail them into place through the length boards into the plank ends to provide cross support for the platform.

    • 5

Cut four 4-inch square blocks from the 2-by-4 planks and nail a block into each frame corner to help provide additional support for the frame perimeter.

    • 6

Cut the three-quarter-inch plywood sheets to the size of the platform frame, using equally sized sheets. Place the sheets over the frame with the edges of the sheets flush to the edge of the frame. Nail the sheets in place, spacing a nail every 6 inches along the perimeter of the frame and every 8 inches along the frame crosspieces.

    • 7

Turn the frame over so the platform side is face down. Place a caster wheel base onto each corner, positioned an inch from the edges of the frame so that the base overlaps the frame joint as well as the support block. Mark the mounting holes on the base of the casters, then remove the casters. Use an electric drill to drill a pilot hole into each marked location 1.5 inches deep. Replace the casters and secure them to the base of the platform with 1.5-inch lag screws. Add another caster to the center of the platform over the center brace.

Sand all cut edges of the platform smooth with a fine-grit sandpaper. Wipe with a tack cloth, then flip the platform back over onto its wheels.

Stain the wood the color of your choice with a foam applicator. Allow the stain to dry for 48 hours before placing the mattress back onto the platform.
