DIY Full Sized Loft Bed

Loft beds are the ideal bedding solution if you’re pressed for space in your sleeping area. A type of high bed, loft beds are built high enough to house desks, sofas, bookcases, additional beds or other furniture, allowing you to save substantial space without sacrificing comfort and balance. Though many loft beds are twin-sized, a full-sized bed is better for a person or a couple looking for more sleeping space.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut four 2-by-8-by-96-inch boards into two side rails that measure 80 inches long and two end rails that measure 56 inches long, using a circular power saw.

    • 2

Saw two 2-by-2-by-96-inch lumber boards into two slat support cleats that measure 77 inches long.

    • 3

Divide eight 2-by-4-by-120-inch lumber boards into 10 slats that measure 56 inches long, four ladder rungs that measure 59 inches long and one center support beam that measures 77 inches long.

    • 4

Determine the desired height of your bed and cut four 4-by-4-by-96-inch planks into legs equal to this amount, less 5 1/2 inches.

    • 5

Cut two 2-by-8-foot sheets of 3/4-inch plywood into two pieces that measure 38 1/2 by 56 inches.

    • 6

Create a butt joint by placing the end rails perpendicular to the side rails, flush with their ends, to form an even rectangle. Secure each joint with five 3-inch countersunk screws.

    • 7

Apply strong wood glue to the inside surface of each slat support cleat and clamp them into the inside of the frame, at least 2 inches from the bottom. When the glue sets, secure it with one 3-inch screw placed every 6 inches.

    • 8

Screw the center support beam into place in the center of the bed using 4-inch screws.

    • 9

Lay the slats across the cleats, evenly spaced, and nail them into place with 3-inch nails.

    • 10

Nail the plywood sheets atop the slats using 2-inch nails.

    • 11

Turn the structure upside-down and glue each leg inside of each joint, against the bottom of the 2-by-2-inch cleats. Clamp each leg in place. When the glue sets, drill a 5/8-inch hole through the bed frame and the leg and secure the leg to the frame using a 6-inch long 5/8-inch thick bolt and a nut.

    • 12

Stand the bed up and screw each ladder rung into the foot-end of the bed, spaced evenly between the two legs.
