DIY: Wood Futon

A futon is a versatile piece of furniture that doubles as a bed and a couch. This bed is useful as a cheap couch placed in the living room or as a spare bedroom space saver. The futon is made with or without a frame to hold it above the floor and give it a more conventional couch feel or to continue in the traditional Japanese of having the bed on the floor. The frameless, traditional futon is easier to build and store.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a wide space on the floor in the room in which the futon will be placed.

    • 2

Bore a centered 1/4-inch hole 1/2-inch from each end of six 2-by-4-inch pine boards, 26 inches long, through the 4-inch side of the board using a cordless drill and 1/4-inch boring bit.

    • 3

Place the 2-by-4-inch pine boards on their sides on the floor in two vertical lines of three boards each. Place the two end boards so the ends are overlapping on the inside of the middle boards and the 1/4-inch holes line up with each other.

    • 4

Insert a 5-inch long, 1/4-inch diameter bolt into the overlapping holes and fasten the bolts with a washer and nut creating the two baseboards.

    • 5

Place the baseboards 38 inches apart on the floor.

    • 6

Mark both of the baseboards with lines at 1-inch intervals along the top edge.

    • 7

Lay a 1-by-4-inch pine board, 40 inches long, across the two baseboards at the first set of marks, which leaves a 1-inch open space at the ends of the baseboards and 1-inch of the 1-by-4-inch pine board must overlap the baseboards on each end.

    • 8

Screw the first 1-by-4-inch pine board to the baseboards with 2-inch wood screws using a cordless drill.

    • 9

Continue adding 1-by-4-inch pine boards to the baseboards with a 1-inch between the boards using a cordless drill to screw in a 2-inch wood screw on each end. Each of the three sections of baseboards will hold five 1-by-4-inch boards with 1-inch open ends.

    • 10

Pull the place where two sections connect up, folding the futon into a couch position.
